Metro New Mexico supports a growing industry cluster in alternative energy. An active R&D effort in hydrogen fuel cells draws on technology from Los Alamos National Labs. The region also supports commercialization of solar photovoltaic technology derived from Sandia National Labs. Albuquerque's Emcore partnered with Sandia to create a transponder that promises to make very short-reach fiber optic communications less expensive. Many energy companies benefit from the close proximity and partnership potential of our national labs and numerous research facilities.
