Activites in the biotechnology and biomedical industries include the manufacturing of devices and supplies, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and bioinformatics. Bio-tech companies may benefit from the state's financial incentives and the numerous partnership possibilities with our two national laboratories and abundant research facilities. In 2008 New Mexico ranked 16th on Milken's State Technology and Science Index, a measure of technology and science assets that can be leveraged to promote economic development. Many of the bioscience-based companies participate in the New Mexico Biotechnology and Biomedical Association.

Technology organizations and special partnerships create a unique competitive advantage for industries located in New Mexico. Commercialization programs between Metro New Mexico's national labs and private industry facilitate tech transfer projects. In addition, research parks and incubators help bio-based companies compete in a global economy.

An ideal resource for creating these types of partnerships is the New Mexico Small Business Assistance (NMSBA) Program, which per their website:

"...allows New Mexico small businesses facing a technical challenge to access the unique expertise and capabilities of Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories. At no cost to the business, small businesses with a technical challenge can seek assistance from lab scientists or engineers for projects that require testing, design consultation and access to special equipment or facilities."

Check out the "2010 Flying 40 Awards" for a current list of "gazelle" companies based in the Metro New Mexico region. A few of the companies that made the list include:
